It was the introduction of Graffiti Art and Hip-Hop into the UK (and the book "Subway Art") that inspired him and under the tag - "Pez" derived from his surname Perry he became a graffiti artist and with a group of writers began to receive commissions at the age of 16. After completing A-levels at college an opportunity of a lifetime to visit a school friend who had moved home to Hawaii changed his life. Spending two months on the north shore he painted surfboards for Bill Barnfield in his Wimea Bay surfshop and was introduced to the Airbrush. On his return to England Pez approached a college friend and fellow graffiti artist Anthony Haylock "H" a pupil of the well known airbrush artist Paul Karslake, Pez expressed his interest in the airbrush. It was "H" who passed on some of the basic techniques that he had learned from Paul, from then on Pez worked hard to develop a style which is now very recognisable as his own and sometimes labelled as "Pezism" With the explosion of acid house music in 1988-89 Pez found himself swept up into the infancy of dance music culture that had very little imagery of its own. Using flyers as his canvas, he has been able to exhibit his art to an enormous audience in the UK and around the world, sharing his images with the like minded and communicating a universal feeling without words. Pez also works in other areas of design with clients across a wide spectrum, this website offers an insight into the artists surreal illustrations and into the mind of Steven Perry. |
